Car versus Pedestrian Collisions:

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, during 2011, there were 281,788 motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Most of these crashes occurred in Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, Will and Champaign Counties. These crashes resulted in:

• 4,911 pedestrians injured by motor vehicles
• 135 pedestrians killed by motor vehicles

The vast majority of pedestrian injuries and deaths in motor vehicles occur in Chicago. According to statistics compiled by the Chicago Department of Transportation, each year:

• Over 3,000 pedestrians are struck by motor vehicles in Chicago
• 500 of these pedestrians are left seriously injured
• Between 30 and 55 pedestrians will die from their injuries

The majority of vehicle crashes in Chicago involving pedestrians are concentrated in relatively few neighborhoods, including the Near North Side, Austin, the Loop, the Near West Side, Belmont/Cragin, West Town and Humboldt Park.

Taxi versus Pedestrian Collisions:

Most taxi drivers are not known for being cautious or timid drivers. Most pedestrians in urban areas have had a near-miss with a taxi that was either speeding, ignored a stop sign, or failed to yield while pedestrians were lawfully crossing the street with a “walk signal.” Taxi drivers who violate traffic laws or otherwise put the public at risk may be liable if their careless or reckless actions caused harm to a pedestrian. Any taxi company that oversees a driver who carelessly or recklessly injures a pedestrian may also be liable. In the Central Business District (CBD) in downtown Chicago – an area which includes the Loop, River North, and the Gold Coast neighborhoods – taxis are involved in over 28% of pedestrian crashes. Outside of the CBD, taxis are involved in only 2% of pedestrian crashes.
