Experienced Chicago Bike Lane Accident Lawyers

Our attorneys fight for the rights of injured bicyclists

Many streets in Chicago and other villages and towns in Illinois have designated bike lanes that are designed to help keep bicyclists safe. A negligent driver can quickly cause a bicycle accident that leaves a bicyclist with serious injuries. Since 2008, the bicycle accident lawyers at Keating Law Offices, P.C. have been fighting for the rights of the injured.

It seems like it should be simple. The markings on a road create a bike lane that is to be used for bicycles only. These markings also serve as a warning for motorists that bicyclists are around them. It is a clear sign for drivers to stay out of that lane. That is not just a matter of common courtesy. It’s the law, as stated in section 9-40-060 of the Chicago Municipal Code:

“The driver of a vehicle shall not drive, unless entering or exiting a legal parking space, or stand, or park the vehicle upon any on street path or lane designated by official signs or markings for the use of bicycles, or otherwise drive or place the vehicle in such a manner as to impede bicycle traffic on such path or lane. The driver of a vehicle shall not stand or park the vehicle upon any lane designated by pavement markings for the shared use of motor vehicles and bicycles or place the vehicle in such a manner as to impede bicycle traffic on such lane.”

Holding negligent drivers accountable

Far too often, this law gets completely ignored. Cars and trucks cross the line into the bike lane. Drivers fail to check for oncoming bicycles when making a turn. Drivers park too far away from the curb, partially obstructing the lane. Or they fail to check for bicyclists when opening the door directly in the lane. Drivers double park directly in the lane and idle their vehicles.

Any blocking of a bike lane creates a dangerous situation. The result is often a collision that leaves a bicyclist seriously hurt. In addition to their injuries, they are soon faced with mounting medical bills. If they are unable to return to work for some time, they are also faced with a loss of income.

Bicyclists who are injured in an accident caused by a negligent driver deserve financial compensation for what happened. Recovering this compensation can be complicated. Too many drivers have the attitude that blocking a bike lane is no big deal. They deny any responsibility for causing the crash.

Lawyers with a reputation for getting results

Insurance companies aren’t much help, either. They are concerned about their bottom line. So, to keep their profits high, they keep their payouts low. Insurance adjusters may question the extent of your injuries. They may argue that you had a pre-existing injury. They may even try to blame you for what happened.

Our attorneys are known for our work handling bicycle accident cases. We know the challenges you are facing with your injury claim. That is why we start by investigating your bike lane collision to get the facts. This involves gathering evidence, reviewing accident reports and medical records, and interviewing witnesses.

We are dedicated to helping you recover the compensation you deserve, either through a negotiated settlement or a jury verdict. If you’ve been injured in a bike lane crash, learn more about how we can help. Contact us to schedule a free consultation with one of our bicycle accident attorneys.
