Who is covered under Lyft’s insurance?

Lyft’s insurance policies potentially provide coverage for all parties involved in a Lyft-related crash. Insurance coverage is very fact specific and it is important to discuss your claim with an attorney right away so that an investigation can be done and all the necessary evidence discovered as soon as possible.

Here’s who may be covered:

Drivers

If you’re a Lyft driver and you’re involved in a crash while the app is on, Lyft may provide coverage in addition to any insurance coverage that you as a driver have on your own.

Passengers

If you’re riding in a Lyft and there’s a collision, at a minimum you’re covered under Lyft’s $1 million liability policy and its uninsured/underinsured motorist protection.

Third parties

Pedestrians, bicyclists, or drivers in other vehicles may also be covered under Lyft’s insurance if a Lyft driver is at fault.

What are the Lyft insurance requirements during a crash?

In Illinois, the state regulates rideshare insurance through the Transportation Network Providers Act (625 ILCS 57), which outlines minimum insurance requirements for Lyft. Here’s the different “Periods” on the Lyft app. It is imperative to discuss the specifics of your case with an attorney as there are many variables that go into determining what Period is at play and the role Lyft itself may have had in a crash.

Period 0: App off

When the Lyft app is turned off altogether, it is particularly important to find out how soon before the crash the app was turned off and for how long the driver was on the app before the crash. The driver’s personal auto insurance policy must also cover any accidents that happen during this time.

Period 1: App on, no passenger request

When the driver turns on the app and is waiting for a ride request, a Lyft insurance policy provides insurance coverage.

Period 2: Ride accepted, on the way to pick up

Once the driver accepts a ride request and is en route to pick up the passenger, Lyft provides liability insurance coverage. This also includes:

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) protection
  • Contingent comprehensive and collision coverage for the driver’s vehicle (if the driver also carries this type of coverage on their personal policy), with a $2,500 deductible

Period 3: Passenger in the vehicle

There is insurance coverage for the passenger. This  level of insurance coverage may include:

  • Third-party liability coverage
  • UM/UIM protection for passengers and others
  • Collision and comprehensive for the driver’s vehicle, if applicable
